The Shasta County Sober Grad Program began in 1992 in cooperation with the CHP Redding office to cut down on unsupervised parties where alcohol was being provided to high school students. Sober Grad Night events are held for thousands of graduating seniors each year as an alternative. They offer students a safe, sober, supervised, and fun place to celebrate their high school graduation with their friends. Since this program began there has not been any alcohol related crash due to a graduation celebration.

Here are some statistics obtained from the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.) website and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data.

  • In California in 2003, there were 4,215 traffic-related fatalities; 30% were alcohol-related
  • In 2003, motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of death for young people from 15-20 years old; 25% of these drivers had been drinking
  • In 2000, around prom and graduation weekends, almost 60% of traffic fatalities were alcohol-related

Through the sale of certificates we are able to provide a safe and sober celebration. Purchasing the certificate puts your name into a grand prize drawing held in April. Students that attend the Sober Grad event have their name put into a drawing. The senior name drawn at our school is then placed into a county wide drawing for the possibility of receiving a $3,000 scholarship from the Chemical People.
