Ken C. Hood
Director of Alternative Education
Welcome!

My name is Ken Hood and I really enjoy being the Director of Alternative Education and Principal for the AUHSD Alternative Education Programs. I’m formerly a small business owner and Commercial Artist who changed careers when computers made handmade graphics a thing of the past. In 1990 I began my career in education as a teacher’s aide, then became a Special Education teacher, including a year teaching Special Ed. here at North Valley High School. For 16 years I was at the Mountain Union Elementary School District in Montgomery Creek where I eventually became the Superintendent/Principal. In the course of all those years I earned a Multi-Subject Teaching credential, an Education Specialist credential, a Resource Specialist Certificate, and a Master’s Degree in Education Administration. I still do Art; in fact, I’ve put large murals at every school I’ve worked at. I believe that all students need an education that preserves their unique qualities while opening the door to a brilliant and well-funded future. I’m here to make that happen at our AUHSD Alternative Education schools.

AUHSD is fortunate to have an outstanding alternative education program. Oakview High School (OHS) is the independent study school of the District and is fully Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accredited. The school's curriculum is in line with State Standards. Recognizing that the comprehensive high school does not meet the needs of all students, OHS provides for those students who are unable to attend daily classes. Oakview provides an opportunity for students, who might otherwise be unsuccessful in a comprehensive high school environment, to complete the requirements for a high school diploma.

The total staff is committed to meeting the educational needs of each individual. Since teachers work individually with each student as they come in for their appointments, they are able to get to know their students as individuals. As a result, they are able to recognize deficiencies and prescribe educational remedies. The teachers are caring individuals whose desire is to help each student achieve at his or her own highest possible level.
